Italian Bone Carved Embriachi Marriage Casket

About

Exceptional Italian Embriachi marriage casket. The top slides from left to right. Similar caskets are seen in museums throughout the world. The box is composed of wood with carved bone pieces attached to surface. Various Christian themes adorn the surface. Including the creation scene in one grouping. In the late 14th century, the Embriachi workshop shrewdly stepped into a market eager for ivory and ivorylike products. By joining pieces of bone, flattened and carved in low relief, and surrounding the images with elaborate frames of inlaid wood, horn, and hoof, Baldassare Embriachi, the owner of the workshop, and his chief craftsman Giovanni di Jacopo created a product that satisfied contemporary tastes. The Embriachi family primarily produced caskets. We believe this piece to be 14th century.
